Update: Playground Fire

Our beautiful playground, which was destroyed by fire several weeks ago, will be rebuilt even better.  After much effort to clean up the site of the horrific vandalism, we seem to be finally ready to proceed to the next step.

Currently we have a committee examining proposals that have been submitted for a new playground.  We know that the replacement price for what we had on the site behind the Parish Community Center is $77,000.00.  We are still awaiting the final figures on what the insurance company will be awarding us for the loss.

It has also become apparent that since we have an open campus, and obviously if a simple playground can be such an expense, it is also time to enhance security throughout the entire property. The estimated expense for installing the necessary surveillance equipment in and around all buildings will be around $40,000.00.

In order to preserve the basic funds we have in savings, I will be asking the parish and surrounding community to participate in an appeal.  The total figure will reflect the difference between the replacement costs of the playground and what insurance gives us and the cost of the security system.

I have consulted with the pastoral council, finance council, our trustees, and diocesan officials and all agree this is a necessary action.  More details will become available as they are made available to us.

Currently I am planning on a “soft campaign” through the bulletin requesting approximately $65,000.00.  I am trying to view this campaign, the result of a malicious act, as an opportunity for growth and to demonstrate our resilience in the face of trial.  We will get through it together as a family.

I am especially sensitive to those who are not working or are struggling to support their families, so no one will be asked directly for donations. Please be as generous as your budget allows.
